ELBERTA, Ala. — A library in Elberta may not be too far off.
The idea to add such a facility opened Tuesday’s Elberta Town Council Workshop with by Councilwoman Betty Wood and Alma Doege indicating that they had begun researching the endeavor.
Doege said she had spoken with representatives of the Baldwin County Library Cooperative about an Elberta Library.
“They are very much in favor,” she said.
The discussion included the possibility of using funds from the Literacy campaign at Dollar Store to help back the venture.
“That money can be donated to any part of the town,” Elberta Police Chief Stan DeVane said, “to the schools, to the library — whatever.”
Elberta Mayor Marvin Williams then pointed out a building already in existence.
“We have the senior building,” he said, explaining that efforts to provide a center for senior citizens had been unsuccessful. “There’s the possibility of using it as a library.”
Williams pointed out the building’s centralized location of being situated between the Police Station and Town Hall.
“It already has parking,” he said.
Further discussion included the possibility of acquiring Internet access for a library, as well as funding.
“We would have to have volunteers to run the library,” Wood said.
“There have been some citizens who have shown interest,” Councilman Jim Hamby told Wood.
The discussion ended with the Council giving Wood and Doege approval to further research the project.
