FOLEY, Ala. - On Tuesday, April 12, the Foley Public Library will host two workshops with Kathy Robinson, Ph.D., LPC, of Auburn University on the topic of cyberbullying. The workshops will last one hour each and be held at noon and again at 6 p.m. at the Foley Civic Center.

The recent technology explosion over the past few years has afforded students a new venue for bullying in the virtual world. Cyberbullying is providing fertile grounds for bullying to occur 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students’ homes as well as the classrooms are no longer immune from the harassment and destruction of traditional bullying.

The effects and consequences of cyberbullying have been known to create emotional harm, which have been linked to death-threats, physical fighting and suicide.

This workshop will include information on the nature of cyberbullying, effects, warning signs and prevention and intervention strategies. In addition, technology tactics will be presented to better identify and understand the tools used in cyberbullying. This workshop will present timely insight and resources to parents, educators, the community and other individuals who work with youth at risk for cyberbullying.

Dr. Kathy D. Robinson is a graduate of Auburn University and holds a doctorate in counselor education and supervision. She has more than eight years of experience as a mental health counselor working with individuals in domestic violence, substance abuse and youth at risk. Robinson’s primary research focus is on cyberbullying and has presented at local and state levels on this topic. She is one of the foremost scholars doing research in this area.

The workshops are free and open to everyone, however registration is required.
