DAPHNE, Ala. — The City Council presented Ed Nelson with a certificate of appreciation, applauding his four years at the helm of Daphne’s Recreation Board during Monday’s regular meeting.

Nelson was recognized for using his “secular experience to promote and expand the city’s recreation programs and facilities,” including the establishment of background checks for volunteer coaches, guidelines for youth coaches and an emergency action plan.

His other actions included the development of new soccer and football fields and the creation of the Dog Park at Trione Sports Complex.

The council also issued a proclamation recognizing the week of May 9-15 as National Police Week and May 14 specifically as Peace Officers Memorial Day.

The city’s law enforcement community was recognized for playing “an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms” of local residents. Specifically, the proclamation is intended to raise community awareness about the “duties, responsibilities, hazards and sacrifices” the public service entails.
