Quail Creek Golf Course to reopen Saturday

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Golfers at Quail Creek will find much to enjoy when the Fairhope course reopens on Saturday, after nearly four months of renovations.

“The whole renovation centered around improvement of the putting greens, which are the heart and soul of any golf course,” said Bobby Hall, director of golf. “The greens were completely re-tilled and planted with Tif-Dwarf Bermuda grass to improve the playing surface. We think the new greens will give players a great experience and that they’ll want to come back to Quail Creek again and again.”

The 18-hole municipal course was scheduled to reopen in September, but Hall held up so that all of the putting greens could completely grow in. “We wanted to protect the greens and make certain that they were ready for traffic. That extra time allowed us time to complete all of the other projects and make sure everything looks as good as possible before reopening.”

In addition to the improved putting surfaces, Quail Creek cart paths were all repaved or resealed, giving them a smooth surface and fresh look; bunkers were reworked with new sand with zoysia grass plated on the edges; some trees were removed in key areas to create a more open playing course; and a new Bermuda grass was planted throughout the course.

“There’s probably more grass here now than anyone has seen since the course first opened,” Hall said.

The Quail Creek Clubhouse received improvements, too. Crews repainted the clubhouse, inside and out, and installed new carpets. The old back deck was completely rebuilt, and new landscaping was installed all around the building. There’s also been a change at the Clubhouse grill, Hall said.

“Colin and Monica Tucker, owners of A Taste of New Orleans Café, are leasing the grill, and will bring an exciting new menu. We’re very happy to welcome them to Quail Creek.”

Hall noted that almost every department in the city of Fairhope worked in some way on the renovations.

“Ken Eslava, assistant public works director, oversaw all the work, but we had water, gas, electric, landscaping, and public works involved. Our Course Superintendent, Harold Childress, was here every day since renovations began to ensure the quality of the work. He deserves major recognition for his work.”

Mayor Tim Kant and City Council members Lonnie Mixon and Dan Stankoski will be on hand for the re-opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 3. Play will begin with the regular Saturday Bullpen. Open tee times are available starting at 11:50 Saturday morning.

“We hope you can come play on Saturday, but if not, we will be open on Sunday and from then on,” Hall said. “We’re all looking forward to sharing our new and improved Quail Creek with everyone.”
