GULF SHORES, Ala. — Jimmy Buffett’s free concert on the coast is almost here – again. A week after the postponement of the original concert due to complications resulting from Hurricane Alex, everything appears to be in place and ready to go for Sunday’s rescheduled event.
Grant Brown, Director of Recreation and Cultural Affairs for the City of Gulf Shores says officials are prepared and confident this time, the concert will happen.
“We feel very confident about the beach site,” Brown said. “We are shoring up the area around the stage, putting some additional barriers to make sure when the tide rises, the stage will be fine. We are also getting some assistance from the National Guard who is putting up additional barriers to prevent water from affecting the stage area during high tide.”
As of late Thursday, Brown said the oil forecast was also looking very favorable for the area.
“The oil continues to move to the West, so it looks like it is going to be better than what we have seen as far as the oil on the beach, and we just have a real strong feeling that oil is not going to be an issue.”
Thousands scrambled for the 22,500 tickets that were made available on Ticket Master on June 23. An additional 12,500 were given to local condo rental agencies to be used as incentives to bring people to the coast for the event.
In addition to Buffett, artist Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown were also to appear. After rescheduling the event, Chesney and Brown were forced to pull out of the event, but other big name artists have been rumored to take their place.
“We are not sure who the friends are. There have been several names rumored, but we have had no official word on who might join Buffett for the concert,” Brown said.
Cable network CMT is still planning to broadcast portions of the concert beginning at 7 p.m. central time, and it will be available on CMT.com, Sirius and XM satellite radio.
Brown said the main thing people need to remember is what they are not allowed to bring inside the gates including beach chairs, umbrellas and cameras. Also there will be a no exit policy, so if a ticket holder leaves the site, they will not be allowed back in.
“People are encouraged to bring sunscreen, and complimentary water will be given out to make sure everyone stays hydrated.”
According to Brown, area shuttle services will begin at 10 a.m., the gates will open beginning at 3 p.m. with the first band hitting the stage at 4:45.
There will be 150 buses used to shuttle concertgoers from numerous lots located in area shopping centers and parks.
Handicap accessible shuttles will run as well. There is also a handicap accessible parking lot located near the event site at the northeast corner of Highway 59 and East Beach Boulevard, in the Surf Style parking lot. Appropriate tags are necessary to enter this lot.
