Rehab patient nabbed after fleeing facility, frightening woman

DAPHNE, Ala. — The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Jerry Darby for third-degree escape and second-degree burglary.  Tuesday at approximately 8:45 a.m., Jerry Darby, a 32-year-old white male, who was a court-ordered patient at The Shoulder treatment facility in Daphne, fled from Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office corrections officers who went to arrest him per judge’s orders.

A Taser was fired but missed. The subject was lost in the woods. Officers from the Daphne Police Department and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office responded. BSCO K-9s tracked the subject into Lake Forest.

A Daphne officer and BCSO deputy made contact with a suspicious black male with Mobile plates driving in the neighborhood and contacted him. The subject admitted that he had been called by Darby to pick him up on Willowbrook Court, according to police.

Simultaneously, the K-9s tracked to a specific house on Willowbrook.

The resident was summoned to the door and allowed deputies to search. The subject was found to be in a hallway bathroom. The resident denied allowing him in or knowing he was in the residence (she was asleep when deputies began beating on the door) and despite the suspect’s assertion that she did, responding units believe that she did not. It appears as though he let himself in and used her cell phone which was charging in the living room. No connection between the two can be established, police said.

Darby was transported to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Corrections Center without further incident.

The Shoulder released the following statement.

"Regarding the incident with Jerry Darby, 32, on September 20, he was found to be in non-compliance with The Shoulder’s protocol. Because he had a pending possessions charge within the Baldwin County court system, the judge of record was notified that Darby was being discharged from our program. Baldwin County Circuit Judge Robert Wilters decided to send a sheriff’s deputy to The Shoulder to transport Darby to Baldwin County jail. However, Darby was unaware he was going to be transferred to the Baldwin judicial system until the deputy arrived.

"The officer was about to obtain custody of Darby when the young man panicked and ran into the woods, ultimately reaching a Lake Forest home.

"The Shoulder extends its deepest apologies to the woman who was frightened by this event."
