ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Remember when …
Remember when gas was less than a quarter … you could get two movie tickets for less than a dollar … the price of a new car was about $2,000 and you could get a new house for less than $10,000?
Remember when girls wore poodle skirts, sweaters, Bobbie socks and black and white saddle shoes, and the boys wore white t-shirts and rolled up jeans (with a pack of cigarettes rolled up in the sleeve); and hairstyles included bouffants and beehives; flat tops, crew cuts or “duck tails”?
Remember when the likes of Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and a Gene Kelly graced the Silver Screen?
Remember when you could turn on your television set and (in black and white) watch “I Love Lucy,” Jack Benny and Ed Sullivan (and they were new)?
Remember when every corner drug store had a soda fountain where you could get an ice cream float (Coke or root beer)?
And what about music, the golden era of rock and roll. When your local juke box lit up to the sounds of Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and Little Richard, just to name a few.
If you remember these things first hand, then you were a child of the 1950s.
If you remember those days, and even if you don’t, the PZK Civic Center might just be the place for you on Saturday night, Dec. 5.
“Remember When …. We Danced to the Oldies” will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the PZK, 17933 Highway 104 in Robertsdale.
“We just want everyone to come out and have a good time,” said Debbie Trotti, who is organizing the event with Clyde Brown (known as D.C. Oldies), along with members of the George P. Thames Senior Center in Robertsdale.
The event will include light refreshments, plenty of fun and fellowship. D.C. Oldies will be playing a variety of music from the 1950s, along with live music.
The event will also include door prizes, a “Best Oldies Costume Contest,” and a dance contest.
Admission is $5 at the door. For more information call the Senior Center at 251-947-8973.
