FAIRHOPE, Alabama—A month-long study of allegations of a hostile work environment at the Fairhope Police Department will be presented tomorrow to the City Council and Mayor Tim Kant during a closed meeting.
“Because we have to talk about the good name and character of some people, then we have to go into executive session,” Council President Lonnie Mixon said Friday. “Of course, we’ll make a broad statement immediately after the executive session is over and will be open for questions.”
Lorenzo Howard, a volunteer member of the city’s personnel board, was appointed Sept. 12 as Human Resources Specialist “to conduct an assessment of the recent complaints, allegations, counter-allegations, and potentially dangerous situations that were recently made to the Mayor by Police Department personnel,” according to a resolution that passed unanimously by the council.
“I’ve not been involved in that process other than that I know he’s interviewed a majority of employees,” City Administrator Gregg Mims said. “Beyond that I don’t have any access to the report or what he’s going to say.”
Police Chief Bill Press has denied allegations of a hostile work environment, saying they have been made only by disgruntled police officers who have been disciplined.
Howard, a retired HR professional, declined comment.
“This came about because the council got word that Kant had met with policeman claiming a potential dangerous situation in the department,” Mixon said. “So I felt the council needed to do something to get to the bottom of it.”
