ROBERTSDALE --- Andrew Zimmern, host of the Travel Channel show Bizarre Foods has a saying, "If it looks good, eat it."
How would you like some rabbit dumplings? What about squirrel gumbo? Or maybe your taste would lean more toward baked crickets, or meal worm bread. Perhaps chocolate chirpy chip cookies would be more to your liking?
These and plenty more delights that would make Zimmern feel right at home will be available at the fourth annual Wild Game Night, Thursday, Feb. 9 in the cafeteria and multi-purpose room at Robertsdale Elementary School.
Once again, the RES Parent-Teacher Organization is teaming up with Campbell Hardware to provide both exotic and standard fare as a fundraiser for the school.
RES Principal Faye Sheppard first started the fundraiser at Central Baldwin Middle School when she was an assistant principal at the school and carried the tradition over to Robertsdale Elementary when she became principal two years ago.
"I felt it was a good way to bring the community together," Sheppard said. "Fishing and hunting is such an integral part of this community, it's a perfect fit."
So, she asked Ashley Wingo Kucera and Campbell Hardware if they would help organize the event.
"She and Lauren Sanders (an administrative assistant at RES) have done a great job organizing the event from A to Z," Sheppard said. "We couldn't do it without them."
In addition to the more adventurous fare, the event will also include several incarnations of deer, Sanders and Kucera said.
There will also be fish and shrimp for those who want to stick with a less adventurous menu and hamburgers and hotdogs will be available on the kids' menu.
The buffet-style dinner will cost $6 for adults, $4 for students. Donations will also be accepted for a "special" dessert table with many of Sheppard's own signature dishes.
"It's so much fun," she said, "and the kids love it, the grosser sounding the better for them."
The event will also include a split-the-pot fundraiser.
Gary Finch, author and television host of "Gary Finch Outdoors" will also be on hand for the Thursday night event.
Demonstrations will also be given by gun safety expert Chris Linton, chiropractor Brian Pierce and a representative from Alligator Alley.
Ben Selman and Chris Nelson from Campbell Hardware will also be giving an archery demonstration.
"We felt that this would go perfectly since the school started an archery program this year," Kucera said.
Live entertainment for the event will be provided by the band "4 Chords and the Truth."
Tickets will only be available for purchase at the door on the day of the event. For more information call the school at 251-947-4003 or Campbell Hardware at 251-947-2291.
