FAIRHOPE, Ala. — A local construction contractor was arrested last week in Fairhope on felony charges relating to the theft of money from a local construction site and a boat stolen from Orange Beach earlier this year, said Cpl. Craig Sawyer of the Fairhope Police Department.

Bert Butler Estes, 46, of Fairhope, was arrested Oct. 9 at a construction site on Holly Drive in Fairhope by law enforcement officials of the FPD, the Orange Beach Police Department and the Alabama Marine Police.

“He was booked here and then moved to Bay Minette on Oct. 11,” Sawyer said. “Detective Stephanie Hollinghead with our office went there with an arrest warrant based on an indictment for the theft of $8,700 from a different construction site.”

Sawyer said officials from the other agencies accompanied Hollinghead as part of an investigation into the alleged theft of a 25-foot Proline boat and trailer taken from Orange Beach earlier in the year and valued at approximately $100,000.

While serving the warrant, the officials saw two Yamaha engines on a boat belonging to Estes and matching the description of the ones on the stolen boat, according to a FPD news release.

Although some serial numbers were obscured, the officials found other serial numbers on the engines that matched those stolen from Orange Beach and valued at a total of $40,000, according to the news release.

Estes was charged with theft, two counts of receiving stolen property and obscuring the identity of a boat component.

He was released Oct. 11 from the county jail in Bay Minette on a $27,500 bond, a jail employee said.

The case will be prosecuted by the Baldwin County District Attorney’s office, Sawyer said.

The first court hearing in the case will be in November before Circuit Judge J. Langford Floyd, an employee with the circuit clerk’s office said.
