Here’s a news flash for all current Fairhope political candidates: When most folks tell you they don’t want a sales tax, they mean NO UTILITY RATE HIKES either, to run the city and fund new recreation/tourist attractions.
The long-time practice of pretending utility rate “profits” (beyond increased energy costs and necessary utility reinvestments) aren’t really just taxes in disguise has to end and the rate settling process finally be brought out of back rooms and into the light of day for all to see.
Any candidate just taking the usual “no sales tax” pledge again without including in its utility rates is completely useless to most of us — and phony. Nothing less than the future financial well-being of our city may be at state — no laughing matter.
