SILVERHILL — Residents in Silverhill got the chance to meet their new chief of police on June 30 at the Silverhill Community Center.
Kevin Neal Brock, a native of Robertsdale and a resident of Silverhill, was confirmed as the town’s new police chief at the Silverhill Town Council meeting June 20.
“He was everyone’s first choice,” Silverhill Mayor Tim Wilson said before the June 20 meeting.
A steady stream of residents flowed through the Community Center to welcome Brock, along with his wife Lori during the informal event. Included among those in attendance were several council members and Foley Police Chief David Wilson.
Brock previously served with the Foley and Loxley police departments and has taught criminal justice part-time and as a temporary full-time adjunct professor at Faulkner State University.
“This is a great opportunity to be able to serve in my hometown,” Brock said. “I know there is a lot of healing to be done and we’re also going to be getting to work building up the department to where it needs to be.”
Brock was one of three candidates interviewed during two special work sessions in May at town hall.
Marcus Green, a deputy with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department; and Phillip Robinette, an assistant chief in Mt. Carmel, Tennessee, also made the town’s short list.
The town had been without a police chief since Kim Wasdin, who had served the department as chief since 2007, was terminated by the council during a special meeting in January.
Shortly after the January meeting, the town contracted with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department to patrol the town. At the June 20 meeting, the council voted to end its contract with the BCSO. Tim Wilson said he was told by Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack Jr. that the BCSO would continue to assist with emergency situations.
The town also voted at its June 20 meeting to begin advertising to fill a full-time patrol officer’s position. The town’s only other police officer, Al Malone, was also present at the June 30 event.
