DAPHNE, Ala.—Baldwin County residents took the campaign slogan "A day on; not a day off" to heart. They marched down Main Street and then listened to the keynote speaker for the program, United States attorney for the southern district of Baldwin County, Kenyen Brown. Brown spoke to attendees of the Baldwin County Martin Luther King Jr. celebration about some of the issues black communities face.
Brown said the penalty for crack cocaine use has been reduced and more in line with other drug violations, but cocaine use in black communities is still an issue. He also mentioned that there is a high amount of released prisoners who become repeat offenders within months of becoming released.
Brown’s speech came after Baldwin County residents filled Main Street in Daphne on Monday to celebrate the annual holiday with a march.
Many residents held signs and photos honoring the memory and work of King, and they began singing “We shall overcome,” a well-known song during the civil rights movement.
