Ret. Cdr. Robert Carl Mitchell Sr.

Ret. Cdr. Robert Carl Mitchell Sr., 84, a native of Johnson City, N.Y. and resident of Magnolia Springs, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home with his wife of 65 years, Pauline, on Jan. 9, 2015.

Robert, or Bob as most people knew him, was born and raised in Johnson City, N.Y. He graduated from Johnson City High School and Broome Community College and Navy Navigation Cadet Class of 1952. He retired after 23 years with the Navy as a naval aviator.

He managed a small airport in Greensboro, N.C. for a time then moved back to Johnson City due to family illness.

Bob retired after 16 years as superintendent of buildings and grounds for the J.C. School System.

He and his son formed a drag racing team of which he was the “Mitch” in the Son of Mitch Racing Team. Bob and Pauline left New York and moved to Magnolia Springs where they have lived for the last 21 years.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline G. Mitchell of Magnolia Springs; three daughters, Helen (John) Bass of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Patricia (Thomas) Woodfin of Beatrice and Lisa (Mark) Czekala of Johnson City, N.Y.; three sons, Robert C. (Sue Ann) Mitchell of Greensboro, N.C., Scott W. (Tammy) Mitchell of Johnson City, N.Y. and Jeffery (Jean) Mitchell of Johnson City, N.Y.; and a sister, Betty Cole of Ana Maria Island, Fla.

There will be a private celebration of life service for Mr. Mitchell at a later time.
