Ret. Col. Leslie Elliott Allen, age 83, a native of Pocatella, Idaho, raised in Fairhope and a current resident of Birmingham, died Sept. 1, 2012, due to complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Mr. Allen was active in scouting, earning the rank of Eagle. He graduated from Fairhope High School and was a 1952 graduate of Auburn University. The focus of his career was the printing business and his military service. He was retired from the Alabama Army National Guard a Colonel after 31 years, and was awarded the Legion of Merit for his service. He was a member of the Fairhope United Methodist Church where he served as a lay leader. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Blanche Allen; brother, Robert and sister, Lucy Ray. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Strickland Allen; children, Alyce Lucius of Hattiesburg, Miss.; Paul (Elizabeth) Allen of Mountain Brook; grandchildren, William Lucius of Hattiesburg; M. Baker Allen; Catherine Allen and Margaret Elise Allen all of Mountain Brook; brother, David (Boots) Allen of Fairhope; nieces, nephews, many other family and friends. Funeral services will be held from the Fairhope United Methodist Church, Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Montrose Cemetery.
