Reunion celebrates class of 1950

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Douglasville Alumni Association held its Class Night Reunion on July 1 in the Bay Minette Civic Center. The theme for 2009 was “Remembering our Past as We Plan for Our Future.”

The class of 1950 celebrated their 50th year reunion. That year, the graduating class consisted of 31 graduates. Some of those present were J. Allison Boykin, Bernice Henry Boykin, Jessie Moorer, William C. Shoots and Robert E. Washington.

They were introduced by Sarah Jones.

It’s always great seeing everyone and catching up on where they are and grandchildren is a must to talk about. The program got started about 8 p.m. with prayer by the Rev. James Crook. Welcome by Lucinda Freeman followed with expressions by Bernice Boykin.

The school song, “Dear Old Douglasville,” was led by Naghma Gray and Willie Lamar. Words of wisdom and the the speaker was J. Allison Boykin, who did a wonderful job. Allison is also president of Douglasville Alumni Association. Delores Bert is vice president and presented certificates to the 2009 scholarship recipients, along with Carver Thomas and Lula Lee.

The 2009 scholarship recipients were Heather Brown, Kierra Williams, Jordan Culliver, Jimeshia Bennett, Briana Hollis, Shaniqua Griffin, Latoya Turner and Lillian Williams.

They each received a $1,000 scholarship to the school of their choice. We are proud of these young people and many more who are determined to continue with their education.

Also on the program was James C. Cox, who did a very special memorial for Dr. Clarence Gardner, along with Dr. Gardner’s wife, Elouise. He served as vice president of the alumni association along with James Cox as he was the president They both had to resign due to health reasons in 2008.

One thing is for sure: Dr. Clarence Gardner may be gone on home to be with the Lord, but his spirit still lives on. He loved Douglasville and the alumni association and always went the extra mile to share that love. We truly miss his presence and leadership.

The class night was great and lots of hard work was put into it. We look forward to even more for next year as we pray and expect to have everything on site of our alma mater. Special thanks to J. Allison Boykin and Willie Lamar. God bless you.

Morning Dove Baptist Church will have their choir anniversary on the third Sunday in July at 3 p.m. Everyone is invited. The Rev. Stanley Cox is pastor.

Union Baptist Junior Choir Anniversary will be the fourth Sunday in July at 3 p.m. Victoria Taylor is director and invites you to come share in this special program.

A big hello to Lt. Clarence Crook Jr. and Ricky Coley. The Moore and Ulmer family had a big family get-together for this holiday and I must say that Ricky Coley seemed to have a good time. They are both married to sister in the family and that makes them brothers in law.

The cookout Friday night was at Lt. Clarence and Toni Crook’s home. On Saturday, everything moved over to the homestead site at the Moore/Ulmer home on Hardy Avenue.

On Sunday, everyone was back down to Clarence and Toni Crook’s home on White House Fork Road. It’s always great to come together in good times and enjoy one another. It was some good eating, too.

Let’s pray for the Harris family in the passing of Willie Harris. He had been sick for quite some time.

Until next week, you be blessed.
