RHS Bears making strides in cross country

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. – Robertsdale sophomore Tyler Phelps' continuing strong showing along with senior teammate Zachary Kimerer has the Golden Bears boys cross country team looking to contend at the Baldwin County championships Saturday.

RHS coach Julie Thomasson said the team has been building toward a strong season finish.

"The men's team has potential to do well at county," she said. "They have been training hard all season, so we are hoping to improve our times from last year. The guys have been working on building the cross country team and trying to generate excitement about running. This year I have 15 boys running and it is the largest number of young men to compete for RHS' cross country team in years."

Phelps placed second overall and was the first Baldwin runner to finish with a time of 18:05 and Kimerer was 12th with a time of 19:04 at the Great Muddy Cross Country Classic last week at Medal of Honor Park in Mobile. Kimerer is the team captain and the only Golden Bear with four-years of experience.

Although young and hampered by injuries, the Lady Golden Bears are also working hard to get better.

"My women's team is young with three ninth graders and one is out for the season with a foot issue (Tyler's sister, Trista Phelps)," Thomasson said. "The ladies have been putting forth a great effort and continue to improve their times at each meet."

Hosted by Daphne High at Al Trione Park near daphne Middle School on Whispering Pines Road, the Baldwin County cross country championships begins tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. for the girls and 9:15 a.m. for the boys.
