RHS Powder Puff Bowl rescheduled to Dec. 13

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Due to rain the Powder Puff Bowl had to be rescheduled to Dec. 13, said Amanda Givens, Robertsdale High’s cheerleader sponsor.

“The game will still start at 5:30 p.m. and tickets will be $3,” Givens said. “We’ll still play the game at J.D. Sellers Stadium. This will be the Tuesday evening of the week the students get out for the Christmas Holidays.”

The junior girls will take on the freshmen, and the seniors will play the sophomores in the first round. The winners of each of the previous games advance to the championship game while the losers will vie for third place.

“The money we make from the Powder Puff Bowl will help the cheerleading program,” Givens said.

The fall semester’s All County Teams for athletics were recently named. Making the All County Volleyball Team were: Ebony Mitchell, Kayli Evans, Austin Richardson and Bethany Coley. For Varsity Football the RHS group includes: Hunter Vaughn, Alphonzo Stewart, Chase Hadley, Austin McCrae, Demetrius McKinney, Ryan Dean, David Dalton, and Jacob Lee.

Trista Phelps was the only Golden Bear to make the All County Girls Cross Country Team, and Christopher Redd was the only male to make the All County Boys Cross Country Team.

Julie Thomasson, the RHS cross-country coach, was notified that she had been selected as Co-Cross Country Coach of the Year. She shares the honor with Mike Rauch, the Spanish Fort High coach.

Robertsdale High’s Model United Nations Delegation won for the 12th year in a row as they sent Dr. Cindy Erickson into retirement with a win.

The Golden Bear team of Jonathan Keating, Ryan Davidson, Tyler Byrd and Shariden Lord, who represented China, took Outstanding Delegation honors.

Keating, Lord and Byrd also took Premier Speaker honors in their respective committees.

“Students are given topics, which will be discussed during their committee meetings,” Erickson said. “They have to research these topics so that they can speak or help write the papers their committee will produce. You almost have to start in August to prepare properly.”

Erickson said she would probably serve as a judge next year, but that due to some of the ins and outs of the Retirement Systems of Alabama rules she felt she needed to leave at this time.

“Model U.N. gives you the chance to be around some of Baldwin County’s best and brightest students,” she said. “They come in dressed very professionally, and they act that way during the two-day event. I’m really going to miss these kids, but I know they will go on to make me proud of them as they go through college, start careers, as well as families, and make an impact on the communities they reside in.”

As mentioned in last week’s column, Principal Craig Ross spent the Thanksgiving holiday competing in an Ironman Triathlon in Cozumel, Mexico.

The race consisted of a two-and-a-half-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a full 26-mile marathon.

“I was able to finish in the top 10-percent of my age group, which is the 36-39-year-olds,” Ross said, “but I’m afraid that’s not good enough for the world championships in Hawaii. I would still like to run the English Ironman maybe this spring or summer.”

Ross turned in times of on 1:13 in the swimming portion, 7:30 in the bike ride and 6:47 in the marathon.

“During the bike ride we were facing a 56-mile-per-hour head wind during several legs of the race,” he said. “That really slowed the times down.”

Only 1 percent of the population compete in an Ironman. To finish in the Top 10 in your age group of such an event says a lot about a person’s physical condition and stamina.

The Alabama High School Graduation Exam is being given this week at a variety of locations across the RHS campus. The schedule is as follows: social studies will be given on Monday, biology/science, Tuesday, math, Wednesday, reading, Thursday, and language, Friday.

Final exams for all of the students for the fall semester will be as follows: third and fourth block classes on Dec. 15 and first and second on Dec. 16, which is the last day of class prior to the Christmas Holidays.

Master Chief Bob Dairy of the RHS Jr. Naval ROTC, said the recent Relay for Life had raised $37,000, but the American Cancer Society was still counting.
