Rhythm and Ribs big weekend gets Gulf Shores OK

GULF SHORES, Ala. – After some initial concerns about having an outdoor party to introduce a new restaurant/music venue on an already busy weekend, the Gulf Shores City Council OK’d an assembly permit for Rhythm and Ribs.

\The new restaurant is located on East Second Street where a Mexican restaurant, among other things, once operated. It is in the same area as Tacky Jack’s and in an area where the city is hoping to foster an entertainment and shopping district.

On the same weekend as the Hangout Festival and a national softball tournament, the restaurant owners are planning an outdoor music event behind the restaurant. There will be food, live music and alcohol. During Monday’s meeting, the council OK’d the venue’s liquor license as well.

“I know there was some concern that this would potentially stretch some of our departments, particularly fire and police with this going on with the music festival,” Mayor Robert Craft said. “So there’s private security in place and you’re comfortable and our department heads are comfortable that we can handle this in the city during that weekend?”

“Yes we are,” Director of Recreation and Cultural Affairs Grant Brown said. “Staff is recommending its approval.”

City staff recommended the permit be granted with these conditions. All outdoor music must end by 10 p.m. Barricades will be placed on East Second Street to prevent pedestrians from going into the roadway.

A private security firm will be hired to assist with parking and general security. And no parking will be allowed on the west side of East Section Street. No parking would be allowed on city rights of way.

“How are they addressing the right of way and blocking that stop sign so people can see?” Councilman Joe Garris asked.

Brown said the owners agreed to that condition as well.

“I met with the applicant last Tuesday after our committee of the whole meeting on Monday,” Brown said. “They will make sure the intersection of East 24th and Second is kept clear.”

Owner Ronnie Penton thanked the council for the granting the permit and is looking forward to opening his business.

“We intend to be a member of this community and we want to thank all the departments; Grant and Andy (Bauer) and George Surrey, Miss Wanda (Parris) have been very helpful to us and we want to thank you for your consideration,” Penton said. “We want to help the community go forward.”

Craft said the opening of new businesses in the area is what the city potentially envisions for that area of the city.

“We’re excited about the opportunity for that overlay district area that you are a part of and you add and enhance that area,” he said.
