Richard George King, 88, passed away while in retirement in Fairhope on Feb. 2, 2014. Much of his adult life was spent in the Fredonia, N.Y. area.

Richard was born in Cochranton, Pa. in 1925 to Francis Lee King and Donald West King Sr. He graduated from Jamestown High School and continued his education at Syracuse University, where he graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree.

Richard is best described as an entrepreneur. He ran a number of businesses throughout his lifetime, including a modeling agency in New York City and a real estate brokerage in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Richard’s most significant enterprise was King Brothers Doors and Windows Co., with the main office in Fredonia. He started this manufacturing company with his brother, William T. King. At its peak, the company had 14 sales offices/plants throughout New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. It employed hundreds of people.

“Dick,” as he was known to many, served in the U.S. Army in the early post-World War II era as a Japanese translator.

He enjoyed playing tennis in his younger years, was a voracious reader and enjoyed discussing politics and economics, often with a fierce opinion.

Dick had a solid appreciation for impressionist art and convertible sports cars. He did not drink or smoke, but never saw an apple pie a la mode that he did not like!

Richard is survived by his two sons, Bradley King of Medford, Ore. and Mark King of Boston, Mass.; two brothers, Donald W. King of New York City and James W. King of Toms River, N.J.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services will be held near/at the Chautauqua Institution in New York on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014.
