Riders gearing up for Back Road Bike Ride

Posted

SUMMERDALE, Ala. — Founder of the Youth-Reach program, Curt Williams, is passionate about what he and his staff do to rehabilitate troubled teenage boys.

So much so that in April, Williams biked from the facility in Houston to Youth-Reach Gulf Coast here in Baldwin County, a 530-mile trip.

The trek’s objective was raising money to continue constructing the facility, which needed classrooms, a cafeteria, a laundry room, a maintenance building and a barn.

Now they are focusing in on the cafeteria/classrooms and staff housing where an estimated $600,000 is needed to complete construction.

“We don’t have a target date,” said Williams. “We have a target dollar.”

Now Williams is asking the community to take a ride. The Back Road Bike Ride is the latest installment in fund-raising for Youth-Reach Gulf Coast.

The bike ride will be this Saturday, May 24, and will begin at 11 a.m. at Christian Life Church in Orange Beach. The motorcycle trip will take bikers through 60 miles of back roads of Bon Secour, Magnolia Springs, Point Clear, Fairhope, Silverhill and Summerdale. The ride will end at the Youth-Reach facility in Summerdale, where there will be a celebratory ending with music by Ken Lambert, door prizes including a two-night stay in a condo, food and motorcycle games.

Special to the ride is grand marshal Bubba Blackwell, famed motrocycle daredevil, who will lead the pack of good-doing bikers.

Pre-registration can be done at Gulf Shores Power Sports, Hawg Pen, Mobile Cycle Center, Joe Raley Builders and Billy’s Seafood. The pre-registration fee is $20 for a bike with one rider and $25 to include a passenger.

Registration the day of the ride will begin at 9 a.m. at Christian Life Church. Registration fees will be $30 for a bike with one rider and $35 to include a passenger.

All participants will receive a Back Road Bike Ride t-shirt, biker pin and the opportunity to win door prizes.

Those who don’t ride can still come out and support Youth-Reach Gulf Coast at the afternoon event, which Williams said should start around 1 p.m.

They encourage the community to come and meet Bubba Blackwell and take part in the festivities.

Youth-Reach Gulf Coast was opened after Williams recognized that more than half the beds occupied at Youth-Reach Houston were teenage boys from Baldwin County.

Recently talk of a new law has come about that will require the county to place delinquent boys who have not committed a violent crime into a facility, according to director Derrall Mayfield. This means that there is a great need to finish.

The Christian-based program offers a residential program to boys aged 12 to 21 and is free-of-charge.

“The boys that finish our program become men,” said Williams. He said that because there is no charge to go through the program the teens feel like they have to "earn their bed" to stay in the program.

Currently there are 18 boys living at the facility and Williams said that once the cafeteria is built they can double that number.
