BAY MINETTE, Ala. — Cyclist will take to the roads rain or shine Saturday in an event to raise money and awareness for cancer research.
The RIDEYELLOW road cycling event benefiting the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Ronald McDonald House has set a goal to raise $50,000.
“We currently have 240 riders registered and this is changing by the minute,” according to Ann White Spunner, one of the event organizers.
The ride will begin at Halliday Park Baseball Complex at 7:30 a.m. with a memorial 6-mile ride as a group escorted by the Bay Minette Police Department to honor friends and family affected by the disease.
Riders have several options of courses — a 10- , 36- or 62-mile route through Baldwin County.
“I’m planning on doing the 62-mile ride and I’ve been preparing for this ride for weeks,” said Chad Vinson, a Bay Minette resident and cyclist new to the event. “Bay Minette has many opportunities for cyclist and I am proud to participate.”
Online registration at rideyellow.org can be made until June 12 at $50 for adults and $25 for 18 and under. Walk up registration begins at 5:30a.m. the day of the fundraiser and the cost is $65 for adults and $40 for 18 and under.
Last year, 300 cyclists from eight states participated in the inaugural ride and raised nearly $18,000.
The first 500 pre-registered riders will receive a goodie bag with a T-shirt, water bottle and lots of fun things. All riders and spectators along the course are urged to wear yellow jerseys or T-shirts.
The post-ride celebration at the Halliday Park Baseball Complex will offer head and neck chair massages by Blue Cliff School of Massage Therapy students, great food, including genuine Cajun food prepared by a group of volunteers from Louisiana, and fresh fruit.
