The Daphne Planning Commission at its meeting Thursday unanimously granted favorable approval to the City Council to accept a proposed right-of-way at the intersection of Alabama Highway 181 and U.S. Highway 90.
The previously undefined area has caused confusion for emergency units responding from Daphne, Spanish Fort and Baldwin County.
“It’s mainly for fire and police protection,” Director of Community Development Adrienne Jones said. “In the past, they’ve had confusion as to who services the area.”
“From Highway 13 going east to the intersection of 181, the right-of-way has never been accepted there,” Mayor Fred Small said. “If you had gotten in a wreck, you’d have to wait for county.”
Small added that the city will consider annexing the area.
Jones said a map detailing the proposed right-of-way adjustments and required legal descriptions have been sent to the Alabama Department of Transportation in Montgomery.
Legal descripions explain the changes to precise coordinates, spell out the right-of-way’s directions and contain the mayor’s and city attorney’s approval.
