DAPHNE, Ala. — The Daphne Planning Commission discussed the city’s options regarding the possible annexation or acceptance of an agreement for the city to maintain the right of way on Alabama Highway 181 from U.S. Highway 90 to the south parcel line of Oldfield subdivision.
Public Works Director Richard Johnson — who presented the options to the commission — gave the commission background information on the topic. Johnson explained that there was an understanding between the city and the Alabama Department of Transportation for the city to take over maintenance, but now the city may annex the rights of way.
Commissioner Bo White, the city’s fire chief, said from a public safety standpoint, the annexation would clear up a lot of confusion.
“Right now, when we receive a call, they (dispatch) have to decide whether it is (in) Belforest or Daphne,” White said. If the property is not within the city’s police jurisdiction, the Daphne police department does not respond and someone else has to be called.”
