Robert “Bob” Oberg, 77, went peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Bob was surrounded by his family, all visiting from Michigan and Atlanta for a week at the beach. Sue, his wife and caregiver, held his hand as she had for months as his gentle smile found final release.
Bob was a man who loved action and travel. His work with Baxter International gave him and Sue the opportunity to travel the world. His passions were many: fried chicken wings, Dew Drop hotdogs, fly fishing, attending the Friends in Faith Sunday school class at the United Methodist Church, mentoring future business leaders through the SCORE organization and throwing Mardi Gras beads as part of the crew of Mullet Mates.
Bob also threw the greatest Kentucky Derby parties at his home every first Saturday in May. In a category by itself was his love for Nick Saban, Alabama football and the Red Elephant Club.
His children, grandchildren, nephews and niece held a special place in his heart. He headed to Michigan every summer and to Atlanta every fall for his traditional visits.
In recent years, around the Fourth of July, his grandson from Atlanta and nephews from Mobile upheld his long tradition of a spectacular fireworks show from his pier that extends into Mobile Bay.
Bob was born Oct. 16, 1937 in Grand Rapids, Mich. As a longtime Delta Airlines million-miler, Bob will make his final trip home to Michigan and will of course, change planes in Atlanta!
He is survived by his wife, Sue Oberg; daughter, Cindy Helmer; son, Brett (Lisa) Oberg; grandchildren, Jason, Dusty, Zachery and Tyler; five great-grandchildren; a niece, nephews and other relatives and friends.
The family would like to thank a very helpful and exceptional caregiver, Pamela Adkins.
A celebration of life service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015 at Fairhope United Methodist Church, 155 S. Section St., Fairhope, AL 36532. There will be an unforgettable reception to follow at Bob’s home for remembering how great he was and will also include a grand finale fireworks show.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030, “Making Cancer History.”
