ROBERTSDALE, Alabama - The Robertsdale Golden Bears picked up their first win of the year on senior night with a 35-33 win over winless Baldwin County, despite giving the Tigers two chances to tie the score in the final two minutes.

BCHS pulled to within one point of the Bears with an 8-yard touchdown throw from Nathan Jones to Devonte Preston with 1:45 to go in the game. Tigers kicker Dillon Brinkley, who had missed an extra point on the Tigers opening touchdown of the game, failed to connect because of a low snap.

On the ensuing Bear drive, Alphonso Stewart capped a three-play, 45-yard drive with a 17-yard scamper that only drained 27 seconds off the clock. The drive also included two runs by DeMarcus Robinson for 28 yards.

The Wyatt Cordova kick was true and Robertsdale took a 35-27 lead with 1:08 left.

The Tigers scored quickly with a Jones strike to Keelen Hooks for 13 yards that capped a six play drive that included Jones’ passes to Preston for 16 yards, Brandon Goins for three yards and Andre Cox for 19 yards.

A delay of game penalty forced BCHS to attempt the two-point conversion from the 7-yard line with 17 seconds remaining. The Jones pass intended for Jaquan Finch sailed out of bounds.

The Bears ran the ball well all night, which helped carry them through the game, said coach Bryan Campbell. Robertsdale gobbled up 291 yards on 47 carries led by Robinson with nine carries for 72 yards, Stewart with 10 carries for 66 yards and a touchdown and Tavaris Curry with 71 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.

“That’s what we practiced all week to do,” Campbell said. “We wanted to try to out muscle them.”

The Bears found pay dirt with relative ease on their first drive of the game, scoring on a four-yard pass from Dylan Smith to Stewart. Cordova’s kick was good and Robertsdale took a 7-0 lead with 8:23 left in the opening quarter.

The Tigers answered back with a 48-yard strike from Jones to Hooks that brought BCHS within one point with 7:21 left in the quarter.

The Tigers’ Andre Davis intercepted a Smith pass and returned it to the 3-yard line. Jones snuck in for a touchdown and converted two points with a pass to Juwan Judge to take a 14-7 lead with 6:10 left in the first quarter.

Robertsdale tied the game on a 36-yard pass play from Smith to Stewart with 2:06 left in the first. The Cordova kick was true.

The teams traded punts before a snap flew over the head of the Tigers’ quarterback and resulted in a loss of 17 yards on fourth down.

Robertsdale capitalized on the good field position with the ball at the BCHS 47. The Bears capped an eight-play drive with a Stewart scored from 14 yards out. The Cordova Kick was good and they led 21-14 with 3:24 left in the first half.

The Bears scored first in the second half, finding the end zone on a six-yard run by Curry. The Cordova kick was good and Robertsdale took a 28-14 lead with 2:20 left in the third quarter.

Baldwin County answered back with a 10-yard run by Cox. The Brinkley kick brought the game to a seven-point difference with 11:17 left.
