The Bears (1-2) outscored the Dolphins (0-3) 12-6 in the fourth quarter, holding Gulf Shores scoreless in until the final minute.
“We challenged the kids to come out and play hard the first three minutes of the third quarter and to carry that over into the fourth,” Robertsdale head coach Marshall Davis said. “We told them to play disciplined assignment basketball, and they did that. We have a pact in Robertsdale basketball that if we can hold you to under 50 points we have a chance to win, and we did that.”
Robertsdale held a 13-7 lead after one period and built a 24-16 margin by halftime. Alphonso Stewart scored 13 points and Rashad Hobby had 11 for the Bears, who host the Spanish Fort Toros on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Davis said his team had some things to work on after the Gulf Shores win and said they would practice early Wednesday morning to prepare for the Toros.
“I think we came out a little flat, we were excited but we missed too many layups,” Davis said. “I think we were bigger than them, and our kids played hard. We have a long way to go. We need to get in here and work on the fundamentals and get prepared for Spanish Fort.”
Daniel Laborde had 19 points for Gulf Shores, who will host Bayside Academy on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
