SPANISH FORT, Alabama — A Robertsdale man was riding his bicycle in the early morning hours Thursday in Spanish Fort when he was struck and killed during a three-vehicle accident.
Christopher Allen Jerkins, 38, was killed when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a 2001 Honda Accord. The crash occurred at 1:10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11 near the 9-mile marker on U.S. Highway 31, 2 ½ miles outside of the Spanish Fort city limits, according to a release issued Thursday by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Public Information and Education Unit.
According to the release, the Honda swerved in an attempt to avoid the cyclist, crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a 1994 Chevrolet pickup.
Jerkins was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the Honda, as well as the driver of the Chevrolet, were taken to Thomas Hospital in Fairhope for medial treatment.
Alabama State Troopers continuing to investigate.
