Robertsdale Council donates to Central Baldwin Middle School tutor program

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. – The Robertsdale City Council voted to donate to the Central Baldwin Middle School tutoring program at its meeting Monday morning.

Sheila Mitchell, a retired teacher at CBMS, said she now serves 200 students per day as an English tutor at the school.

“This is something, just like a lot of programs in education today, that suffers because there isn’t any money to support it,” she said. “These are kids primarily that don’t have the support system at home. They don’t have somebody who checks to make sure they are doing the work properly. They don’t have somebody who can give them praise when they are doing a good job.”

Mitchell said, while there are funded programs for gifted students, the tutoring program serves as the only stop-gap for struggling students.

“It’s great to see that we have something that helps those quiet good students,” she said. “It’s really an opportunity for us to do something to make a difference.”

The Council voted unanimously to give $3,000 to the program in three quarterly installments, one for October, one in January and the final installment in April.

In other business the council once again tabled action on a proposal from Code Enforcement Officer David Kilcrease to set a uniform name for Highway 59 within the city limits.

It was also announced that the Council will hold two public hearings, one at 7 p.m. Thursday and one at 9 a.m. Saturday, to discuss plans for a Splash Pad at Garrett Park.
