ROBERTSDALE, Alabama -- In the mood for something different? How about some squirrel gumbo? What about rabbit dumplings, or frog legs? Maybe venison or exotic seafood is more to your taste.

Whatever your palate prefers chances are you’ll find it at the Fifth Annual Robertsdale Elementary School Wild Game Night, Thursday, Feb. 28 in the cafeteria and multi-purpose room at the school.

Once again, the RES Parent-Teacher Organization is teaming up with Campbell Hardware to host the event which will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets for the buffet-style meal will cost $6 for adults and $4 for children.

“We always look forward to hosting Wild Game Night,” said RES Principal Faye Sheppard. “It’s an opportunity for the community to come together at the school and it’s a way to promote local business.”

A total of 21 vendors will be on hand at the event, hawking wares and giving demonstrations, mostly on outdoor and wildlife-related activities.

Sheppard said she first started the fundraiser at Central Baldwin Middle School when she was an assistant principal at the school and carried the tradition over to Robertsdale Elementary when she became principal two years ago.

“Fishing and hunting is such an integral part of this community, it seemed like a perfect fit,” she said. “Our PTO will be hard at work cooking all day for the event, we let the students dress in camouflage that day. It’s just a fun event for the community.”

In addition to the more adventurous fare, the event will also include chicken, hotdogs, hamburgers and pizza provided by Mellow Mushroom, said Lauren Sanders, who helps organize the event on behalf of the PTO.

More traditional fish and shrimp dishes will also be available with seafood provided by Aquilla Seafood. Dennis Calvert will also be serving up gumbo and Slippers & Taps Dance Studio will provide chili.

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department will also serving their own special brand of hot sauce and rubs will be provided by owner John Lobb of PJ’s Deepsouth Seasoning in Robertsdale and owner Frank Stewart of Frank’s E-Town “Bam” of Elberta.

Special guests will include Gary Finch, author and television host of “Gary Finch Outdoors.” There will also be turkey call and gun safety demonstrations and chiropractor Brian Pierce will be serving up squirrel “wings.”

Live entertainment for the event will be provided by the band “The Chords of Truth.”

Tickets will only be available for purchase at the door on the day of the event. For more information call the school at 251-947-4003 or Campbell Hardware at 251-947-2291.
