ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — The Robertsdale Lady Golden Bears and Gulf Shores Lady Dolphins played to a 1-1 tie on Thursday night.
Robertsdale (0-2-1) scored with 13:55 left in the first half on a goal from Kara Wells. Gulf Shores (3-1-1) evened the score with a goal from Gabi Walters at 23:45 in the second half.
Robertsdale head coach Rachel Baker and Gulf Shores coach Jason Thompson attributed the tie to their teams' defensive play and goal keepers. Fiona Morrison had six saves for Robertsdale, who plays in the Island Cup on Friday at 4 and 7 p.m. in the Island Cup in Gulf Shores.
"This is the most aggressive I have ever seen them," Baker said. "It is only our third game but they played tremendously better than they did last week. They were aggressive, they won 50-50 balls, they communicated better. They really hit the nail on the head with all that stuff."
Thompson said his keeper Maddie McAlister kept his team in the game.
"Maddie really kept us alive," Thompson said. "By my count she had at least 18 saves tonight. Just played a fantastic game in goal."
Gulf Shores played most of the game without Auburn signee Sophie Simantel, who is nursing an injury suffered during the Southern Shootout last weekend. Simantel entered the game in the final minutes, but the Lady Dolphins were unable to score.
"We just came out flat on offense," Thompson said. "We are struggling to find offense without Sophie. That's something we really have to work on. We have got to find a way get our offense going."
Gulf Shores plays at Foley on March 1 at 5:30 p.m.
