ROBERTSDALE, Alabama – Pitcher Briana Pierce gave up just two hits in five innings as the Robertsdale Lady Golden Bears mercy-ruled Gulf Shores 10-0 on Monday.

Robertsdale (8-7, 1-0) has won 8-of-10 games after struggling to an 0-5 start.

“If you had told me two weeks ago after starting 0-5 we would be 8-7 at this point I wouldn’t believe it,” Robertsdale head coach Barry Roberts said. “We took some lumps in the Tuscaloosa tournament and came back and got all our team here and have been playing pretty well since.”

Pierce struck out four batters in five innings to get the win for the Lady Bears.

“Briana has done a great job,” Roberts said. “If my stats are right then she has not walked a batter this year and she has pitched in the neighborhood of 40 innings. She has hit one batter, but she has not walked one yet.”

Senior third baseman Victoria Creamer and the Robertsdale infield forced Gulf Shores into nine groundouts and caught two line drives that could have been hits.

“Overall we did very well defensively,” Creamer said. “We had a few glitches but that’s just something you have to work through to get better.”

Robertsdale scored first when Gulf Shores misplayed a grounder from Harley Volovecky and led 1-0 after one inning. Austin Richardson drove in two runs on a triple, Allee Bertolla had an RBI single and the Bears scored on a wild pitch to take a 5-0 lead after two innings. Pierce and Beth Taylor had RBI singles and Volovecky had a two-run double to extend Robertsdale’s lead to 9-0 in the fourth. Volovecky’s RBI triple in the fifth triggered the mercy rule.

Shayna Elmore struck out four hitters for Gulf Shores in the loss. Ashton Boone and Jordan Reynolds had hits for the Lady Dolphins.

Robertsdale will play Fairhope on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in area play. Gulf Shores will visit BC Rain on Thursday.
