Robertsdale man facing multiple charges

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Extradition back to Nebraska will occur within 30 days for Robert Olney, the 30 year old Robertsdale man, charged with transporting a minor with the intent of engaging in sexual activity and traveling across state lines to have sex with a minor, according to Jan Sharp, Criminal Chief for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Omaha.

Olney was taken into custody by U.S. Marshall’s after a July 19 court appearance in Arkansas and will remain in their custody until he is brought back to Nebraska, Sharp said. An exact date is not known at this time and Sharp had no further details about the extradition. “We really won’t know anything until the Marshall’s office lets us know he is on the way.”

An affidavit sent by the U.S. Attorney’s office in Omaha states Olney picked up the 15-year-old girl he had met in an online chat room in the early morning hours of July 14 from her home in Ainsworth, Neb. His intention was to transport her back to Alabama but an Amber Alert was issued soon after she was discovered missing.

An interview conducted by an FBI agent with her stepfather revealed the sexual nature of the conversations between her and Olney and the computer was taken from the home. Olney and the girl turned themselves in to the Little Rock Police Department on July 15, but not before they had sexual relations in two different locations in Valentine, Neb., and just south of Kansas City, Mo., according to the affidavit.

The affidavit further stated Olney had mailed the girl a cell phone he used to contact her when he arrived in Nebraska to pick her up.

Also, during the course of the interview, Olney’s brother was contacted in New York and agreed to talk to Olney about turning himself in to authorities and several hours later, Olney and the girl turned themselves in to Arkansas police.

According to Nebraska law, a crime has been committed when sexual contact is made between an adult of “nineteen years of age or older and the victim is at least twelve but less than sixteen years of age “ and “is guilty of sexual assault in the first degree.” If convicted, Olney could face life in prison.

Ainsworth is located in Brown County in Western Nebraska and Olney also faces charges there of kidnapping and child enticement. Sharp said he was unsure whether prosecutors were going to pursue those charges when he returns to Nebraska.
