ROBERTSDALE, Alabama – A pair of Robertsdale residents are facing drug and child endangerment charges after an 18-month-old child was found in an apartment following a fire on Wednesday.

Sgt. Rex Bishop, chief investigator with the Robertsdale Police Department, said officers were called to assist the Robertsdale Fire Department following a 9-1-1 call at 8:21 a.m. on March 27 regarding an apartment fire at Annandale Apartments in Robertsdale.

“Based on where the fire was and items found in the apartment, we were able to determine that it was most likely caused by a meth lab explosion,” Bishop said.

Officials with the Baldwin County Narcotics Task Force was called in to assist, along with the Department of Human Resources after an 18-month-old child was found at the scene. Two subjects, Jared Mims, 28, who was listed as the apartment’s primary resident, and Summer Miller, 29, identified as his girlfriend and the mother of the child, were arrested.

The two suspects were transported to the Baldwin County Corrections Facility where they were booked on charges of manufacture of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, chemical endangerment of a child and possession of a controlled substance.

As of Monday both remained in jail, Mims on a $55,000 bond and Miller on a $65,000 bond.

While the fire did not appear to have spread beyond the one unit, Bishop said, significant fire and smoke damage was reported throughout the apartment.
