Robertsdale Senior Center celebrates Easter in a colorful way

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — It was a sea of Spring flowers, multicolored eggs, bunny ears and even a cheesehead and John Deer-inspired theme thrown in as the George P. Thames Senior Center celebrated with an Easter lunch and bonnet contest on Wednesday afternoon.

“Easter is such a special time of year and means a lot to me personally. I hope all of you remember why we celebrate it and have a great time today,” said Sarah Duncan, senior center director.

With a roomful of seniors and about 20 people participating, including a few men, the winners were announced and everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch of ham and all the fixings plus plenty of desserts to choose from for a $5 donation.

When the judging was over, winners included: Most Beautiful-Sandy Stillman, Most Original-Bessie Duncan, Most Outrageous-Paul Boardman and Cutest-Mitzi Boardman and each winner received a stuffed bunny and a flower.

Entertainment was provided by Debbie Trotti, who sang some songs, and door prizes of Pysanky eggs (painted Russian eggs) and egg-shaped candles were given out.

Also honored at the luncheon was Becky Hayes, named “Volunteer of the Year” . Duncan said Hayes had put in 500 hours at the center and was such a huge help to her.

“She comes and leads the exercise class and does all this because she wants to and we are so thankful to have her with us,” said Duncan.

Sandy Stillman and Jerry Sands, the previous two years winners, presented some beautiful Spring flowers to Hayes and a plaque is coming later, Duncan said.
