Robertsdale, Silverhill hold brief meetings after holiday

ROBERTSDALE, Alabama --- The Robertsdale City Council and Silverhill Town Council both made quick work of meetings held Tuesday night in their respective Council chambers.

Both meetings, which were rescheduled from Monday because of the Labor Day holiday, lasted about 10 minutes.

Two of the items on the Robertsdale City Council agenda involved the granting on a on-premise retail liquor license with the State of Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.

First, the Council unanimously approved the ABC Board request for Buddy’s Lounge, which is under new ownership. The Council also unanimously approved a request for Goo Roo’s Grill in Robertsdale. Mayor Charles Murphy was not present at Tuesday’s meeting.

In other business, the Council approved a request to solicit bids for a new garbage truck for the Public Works Department.

Ann Simpson, the city’s chief financial officer, said $150,000 has been budgeted for the item, allowing for a five-year monthly payment schedule beginning with the 2012-13 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

Public works director Scott Gilbert said the truck will replace another truck which is being surplused as part of a five-year rotation. Five-year payments on that truck end in October, Simpson said.

Bids should be ready for consideration by the Council sometime in January or February, Simpson said.

In Silverhill Tuesday night, the Council voted to introduce Ordinance 404 to enter into a contract with the Baldwin County Emergency Communications District (E-911) for emergency dispatch services.

The Council voted to approve the contract at its Aug. 20 meeting.

If approved by all three municipalities and the Board of Commissioners of E-911, the Council has until Oct. 1 to adopt the Ordinance, which will involve a three-year contract between E-911 and the municipalities of Silverhill, Summerdale and Elberta.

Under the terms of the contract, E-911 will “hire, train, pay and provide personnel and associated equipment necessary to dispatch routine communications,” dispatching personnel with the participating towns police departments.

Participating towns are responsible for radio or other equipment, such as walkie-talkies or cell phones to participating officers and the dispatch will not be responsible for personal calls within each department, according to the contract.

The contract calls for each town to pay $790 per officer, not including reserve officers, to be billed quarterly.

Silverhill currently has four full time officers in the police department, said Police Chief KimWasdin.

In other business, the Council approved a declaration to lift the State of Local Emergency which was called during a special meeting Aug. 27.

They also agreed to hold a budget meeting at 5 p.m. Sept. 10 to discuss the 2012-13 fiscal year budget, which needs to be approved at the Oct. 1 meeting, Mayor Tim Wilson said.

The Robertsdale City Council will hold a budget meeting beginning at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17.
