DAPHNE, Ala. — Robertsdale’s Lady Golden Bears took a three-game, area-match sweep on the road in Daphne Thursday.

Robertsdale improved to 2-1 in 6A Area 3 with the 25-20, 25-23, 25-14 win while the Lady Trojans dropped to 1-2 behind area leader Fairhope (3-0). Foley (0-3) trails in the four-team race going into the second half of the season this week. The Bears’ only area loss was to the Lady Pirates.

Acting RHS volleyball coach David Buehler said head coach Metta Roberts had an effective game plan ready that JV coach Anna Shartzer and the team helped him carry out to a get the big victory.

“She had a game plan in place and the girls knew what to do,” he said. “The girls did a real good job with execution and coach (Metta) Roberts did a real good job of preparing them to play. I’m real proud of the girls.”

Buehler said that solid play by all of the players secured the victory but Ebony Mitchell, Kayli Evans, Bethany Coley and Maddie Petite played particularly well against a good Daphne team. Roberts, who is suspended from the bench for the remainder of the regular season, will be back for the Area 3 tournament, he added.

Robertsdale was down by several points twice in game two but rallied back with Ebony Mitchell serving for the win. Game one was tied nine times before Robertsdale broke away.

“The girls never quit, they never gave up,” Buehler said. “That was real good to see. Today was a really good match for them.”

Lady Trojans coach Edoli Herrion said her team, which had a considerable lead in both games one and two, seemed to relax too much at critical points and lost momentum.

“We had too many errors,” she said. “I thought defensively, we did a great job, we adapted to the shots that were thrown at us and I’m proud of the girls for that. It was just stupid errors though and it kind of cost us. We just didn’t finish, bottom line. Robertsdale played great defense, they were really scrappy.”

Sierra Patterson had 13 kills, seven blocks and 11 digs for DHS; Krista Owens had two aces, six kills and 15 digs; Kayla Owens had 29 assists and 12 digs; Jordan Filotei had 10 digs; Katherine Barr five kills and 14 digs; Hope Fulton five kills and Anna Ramsey had seven digs and three aces.

Herrion said her team needs more exposure to situations that are forcing them to commit mental errors instead of closing out leads.

“I’m going to have to put them in tougher situations in practice so the errors we make at crunch time don’t happen again,” she said. “We just had mental errors at bad times.”
