Fairhope, AL — The Eastern Shore Literacy Council has announced this year’s third annual fundraiser, “Rollin’ on the River for Literacy,” at 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center on Sunday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m.

The function offers heavy hors d’oeurves as well as wine and beer as guests enjoy live entertainment – all while benefiting the Eastern Shore Literacy Council, according to a news release.

The Eastern Shore Literacy Council is a non-profit organization with the mission of helping adults function more effectively in society by improving their educational skills and has always provided, at no charge, material and trained volunteer tutors to help adults and older teens meet this standard and to assist them with preparing for their GED.

Today, the Council serves an area including Daphne, Fairhope, Montrose, Point Clear, and Spanish Fort and provides services through approximately 35 trained volunteer tutors.

The impact of illiteracy in Alabama is staggering. It is reported that 50% of adult Alabamians who receive welfare do not have a high school diploma or GED and that over 65% of welfare recipients who earn a high school diploma or GED leave welfare and become self-sufficient within two years, the release stated.

Tickets are $25 a person and may be purchased by calling ESLC at 990-8300 or by stopping by Riviera Utilities at 700 Whispering Pines Road in Daphne.

5 Rivers Delta Resource Center is located across from Meaher State Park on the Mobile Bay Causeway in Spanish Fort.
