DAPHNE, Ala. —A benefit concert on Saturday will feature the musical talents of Roman Street, Mithril, Lillian Nichole and IMPACT, including collaborations between Roman Street and Mithril, as well as pieces written for the event by Nichole and Jillian Wolfe of IMPACT.
One Prayer — set for 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the Daphne United Methodist Church Community Life Center — will benefit Under His Wings, which hopes to aid troubled girls in a new facility.
Tom Morley and David Hughes with Mithril said the band agreed to participate in the concert because they support the cause.
“I am friends with one of the people who put this whole thing together and asked if we would play at it,” Hughes said. “I would say that all four of us support the concept of helping young girls who are in trouble.”
Hughes said the band will play Celtic music with a twist.
“We are an Irish band but we also play a mixture of music from around the world. I guess you could really call it a merging of Spain and Ireland along with a whole lot of other traditions from jazz to African rhythms. It will be a very unique concert,” Hughes said.
The concert will also be a preview of a project Mithril is working on with Roman Street. Both bands are expected to play together at the concert.
“This is actually going to be a quick preview of something that Mithril and Roman Street will be doing in June performing together at the Saenger Theater,” Hughes said.
Noah Thompson, guitarist for Roman Street, said the band would share selections from its CDs along with a jam session.
“We will be playing our original music. It is all instrumental, Latin jazz and we will probably sit in and play a few songs with Mithril as well,” Thompson said.
Roman Street is very active in philanthropy, Thompson said, and helping young women is a cause close to his and his brother’s heart.
“We think it is a good cause and we were raised by a single mother for the most part. We like to help out when we can so that is what we are going to do,” Thompson said.
Jillian Wolf of IMPACT will perform her song “The Lord Who Heals” during the event. Wolf describes the piece as “not very band-driven, but more of a peaceful, encouraging and easy-listening song.”
Wolf said similar programs have positively affected her life and she saw the concert as an opportunity to give back.
“I believe in everything they are doing. My life was one that was transformed and changed by the same type of people who are bringing this event together with the same heart.
“I think it is just another opportunity to raise awareness of a lot of things that are going on in this city that we think are far away. Really, it hits home and hits reality right where we are,” Wolf said.
Singer and songwriter Lillian Nichole composed a song for the event titled “More Than This.” She will also perform a song from her upcoming album titled “Love, God.”
“My sound is kind of like an Indie rock and all of my music is Christian music,” Nichole said.
There will be a silent auction before the concert, which University of Mobile students Maggie Herbster and Brittney Kinsey orchestrated as their senior project.
“We have had so many donors for the silent auction and I am just so thankful people have donated and been willing to give up their time to help us,” Herbster said.
“We have several different baskets of things and lots of art. Art was kind of our emphasis. We have tons of art from local artists. We have a few weekend trips, some hotel stays.”
Herbster and Kinsey hope the event is beneficial to Under His Wings since the start-up organization needs funding and publicity.
“We are hoping to get the word out and raise some money so the organization can get enough money to be able to buy or lease a house,” Herbster said. “Mostly, we just wanted people to find out about the great things they are doing.”
All proceeds from the concert and silent auction will benefit Under His Wings, a refuge where teenage girls in crises can break negative life cycles. The organization was started in 2009, but it has not been able to secure a home to house the teenagers. The organization plans to offer guidance, counseling, educational opportunities and life skills.
Nearly 300 tickets for the event have already been sold, Herbster said.
“It has just been crazy. It is not what we expected, it has been totally a God thing; people have just started coming together. The people have really just made this event. I feel like even though we have been planning it and it has been a long road but everyone has made it already a success,” Herbster said.
A benefit CD will be available for purchase at the event. The $10 album will include tracks from seven girls who came together and wrote a song about their story, Herbster said.
Tickets for the event are $5 in advance and $7 at the door.
Tickets can be purchased by calling 228-234-5903 or 913-669-0128.
