ROSINTON, Ala. — Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department officials say no charges are likely to be brought against a Rosinton woman whom they say shot her husband in the early morning hours Tuesday following a domestic dispute. The man would later die as a result of his injuries.

Police say James Cowan and Pamela Cowan shot each other in the early morning hours Tuesday at their home, 21480 County Road 62 in Rosinton.

At around 1 p.m. Tuesday, hospital officials at the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile confirmed that James Cowan had died following a gunshot wound to the head.

“It appears to be a domestic altercation,” said Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Major Anthony Lowery. He added that deputies are still investigating the situation.

Both victims were shot with a “large caliber handgun,” said Lowery.

According to the BCSO, “James Cowan was assaulting Pamela Cowan throughout the night.”

According to the Sheriff’s office, some time, between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., James shot Pamela once in the chest while she was in bed. He then poured gasoline through the house and on Pamela. It is believed that James began stacking furniture cushions around his wife.

Deputies arrived, and James went into the bedroom in an effort, the Sheriff's Office says, to barricade himself with Pamela.

According to the BCSO release, “James put the hand gun down near Pamela. She picked up the gun and fired at James, striking him in the head.”

After the shot, the deputies entered the residence, secured the scene, and paramedics treated the Cowans.

According to the Sheriff’s office, Pamela Cowan was flown to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola.

While the release says that the BCSO does not anticipate charges being filed against Pamela Cowan, the case will go to a Baldwin County grand jury.
