SUMMERDALE — A Mobile man is wanted by Summerdale Police.
According to Summerdale Police Chief Eddie Ingram, law-enforcement officials have been seeking 35-year-old Victor Lashawn Stanton since Saturday night when he allegedly attempted to “run over two Summerdale Police officers” at a driver’s-safety checkpoint at the intersection of County Roads 28 and 55.
“We just check to make sure people have a valid driver’s license and insurance,” Ingram said in a phone interview. “We do that pretty often.”
But the police chief said that when Stanton pulled up to the checkpoint at approximately 9:40 p.m. Saturday in a 2005 silver Ford F150 pick-up truck, the officer found Stanton and two female passengers, 25-year-old Megan Belinda Brumit of Foley and Desirae Lashae Northcutt of Bon Secour, appearing “very nervous and evasive.” In addition, Ingram said, police detected “the very strong odor of green marijuana emanating from the vehicle interior.”
At that point, police directed Stanton to pull his truck over. But instead of complying, he allegedly “accelerated and swered the vehicle sharply to the right, striking the officer and knocking him backward into a ditch,” Ingram said.
The police chief added that the officer then fired one shot from his gun, flattening the truck’s right, front tire. But Stanton allegedly drove across the intersection into the opposing traffic lane and toward a second police officer.
“That officer was forced to dive up onto the hood of his patrol unit to avoid being struck by Stanton,” Ingram said. “That officer, and a third officer at the scene, then fired approximately five shots into the vehicle’s engine area in an attempt to disable it.”
He explained that the officer who had been knocked into the ditch informed the others that passengers were in the truck.
“I think the officers demonstrated a great amount of restraint during this incident,” Ingram said. “They didn’t shoot the driver, for fear of hitting the two passengers in the vehicle.”
But Stanton allegedly continued driving at high speed south on County Road 55 with police in pursuit and reporting that several bags of contraband appeared to be tossed from the truck.
“Two miles into the pursuit, the right front tire came completely off the rim, but Stanton still refused to stop,” Ingram said.
He explained that the chase continued into a Foley residential area, where Stanton allegedly abandoned the truck and the passengers continued to flee in the vehicle.
“He jumped out and ran, and they took off again in the truck,” Ingram said.
He explained that police pursued both parties separately. Brumit and Northcutt were apprehended when the truck engine allegedly locked up. The two women, both of whom had outstanding warrants, were arrested and booked into Foley Jail. Following Saturday’s incident, they were also charged with attempting to elude law enforcement, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest, with possible additional charges pending further investigation.
The police chief added that the two women were released on bail Sunday and are awaiting a court date.
But pursuit of Stanton, whose police record includes 50 previous arrests, ranging from robbery to kidnapping, did not prove as successful. Ingram explained that units from the Foley Police Department and the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office joined Summerdale Police in a three-hour search that included the use of a K-9 officer.
“Victor Leshawn Stanton is currently at large and is wanted on a number of felony charges,” Ingram said, “which include two counts of attempted assault in the first degree on law-enforcement officers.”
The police chief added that following Saturday’s pursuit, one of the officers did report a minor injury, which did not require medical treatment.
