ROBERTSDALE — A little over a year after his death, Royce Duncan was remembered by the George P. Thames Senior Center Dec. 21 for his 14 years of dedication to the center.
“It’s been a long time coming,” said Senior Center volunteer Cheryl Crews in making the presentation to Director Sarah Duncan. “We just want to take this opportunity to say thank you for all that you do and for all that Royce did for the center.”
A plaque was presented to Sarah Duncan which read “In Honor of Royce Duncan In Recognition of His Years of Dedicated Service 2001-2015 To the Senior Citizens of Robertsdale ‘Always with love in his heart and a smile on his face.’”
“That’s something that everyone whom I have talked to has said about him. He always had a smile on his face and he certainly did,” said Sarah Duncan. “He is definitely missed by all of our family and all of his family here at the Center.”
Fittingly, the honor came at the center’s annual Christmas Party where Royce Duncan served for years as Santa Claus. He also cooked for several events for the center, as well as served as a driver to Senior Center functions as well as making deliveries for area seniors.
He also participated over the last few years in the Alabama Master’s Games, bringing home several gold medals for the center.
Duncan, a big-rig driver, was killed in the early morning hours of Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015 when his truck left the highway after encountering a herd of cattle on U.S. Highway 49 in Mount Olive, Mississippi, located north of Hattiesburg, according to an official with the Mississippi Highway Patrol. He was 57.
A native and resident of Loxley, Duncan was a member of the First Baptist Church in Silverhill, played golf and liked to fish.
He was preceded in death by his father, SFC James H. Duncan and was survived by Sarah, his wife of 32 years, along with two daughters, Olivia Campbell of Loxley, Verona Campbell of Columbus, Georgia; his mother, Bessie Duncan of Loxley, who was also in attendance Wednesday; a sister, Denita Yates of Jacksonville, Florida; brother, Ren Duncan of Loxley; one grandchild, several nieces and nephews.
