DAPHNE — A runaway all-terrain vehicle rolling north on Main Street stunned walkers at the Jubilee Festival and caused damage to a local flower shop.
The vehicle — a Polaris Ranger used for hunting — caused commotion Sunday at around 5 p.m., when the two-day festival — which saw thousands in foot traffic — was winding down.
“Someone had started the four-wheeler and they were loading tables onto it,” Daphne police Lt. Jud Beedy said. “One of the tables hit the gas, the (vehicle) knocked down three tents and one of the tents hit an elderly lady and pushed her to the ground.”
The woman was taken to Mobile Infirmary, Beedy said.
The incident occurred next to Manci’s Antique Club on the corner of Main Street and Belrose Avenue, he said.
Daphne fire Lt. Troy Gorlott said it took about a minute for public safety officials to arrive at the scene.
“Any time there’s a big event like that in the city — the fire department — we like to keep at least two guys there for emergency medical stuff,” he said.
Gorlott said he was stationed behind City Hall when the call came through.
“We responded first to it,” he said. “We got the call as a motor vehicle accident. … We got here and found that the ATV — one of the large utility-type ATVs —was unmanned.”
“It ran through a couple of booths and knocked over a few people,” he added. “We ended up having to transport one person to the hospital.”
Gorlott said he had arrived at the scene after the four-wheeler came to rest in the south side of Flowers, Etc., a floral shop on the corner of Main Street and Daphne Avenue.
The crash took out two columns and bore a hole in the store wall, according to Dan Palmer, owner. The crash had no impact on inside items.
Dr. Albert Corte — who used the four-wheeler to promote the Rileigh & Raylee Angel Ride — said the nonprofit will cover damages.
Officials at press time had no information on the older woman’s condition but Corte said he believes she was not seriously injured.
“I know that she went to Mobile Infirmary and the best that I can get up, she did not even spend the night; she went home,” Corte said.
Though there reportedly were no serious injuries, Gorlott said the incident alarmed passersby.
“More than anything, there was a lot of people that was really shook up about the whole incident, just because it happened so suddenly,” he said.
