ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Fitness enthusiasts and the community will come together to race at the first annual Running Scared 5K.

The race will start at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail in Orange Beach.

Registrations are now being accepted for the run, which costs $20 in advance and $28 the day of the race. This is not just your average race: it’s a Halloween party as well, and participants are encouraged to wear costume. The race is designed for everyone, serious runners as well as those who just want to have a good time with friends and family.

Race committee member Eddie Henry said that the goal of the race is to show off the trail, and to promote fitness awareness.

“The main thing is to get people on the trail, and when they do, they’re going to love it,” Henry said. “They’ll want to get out there more and help with the expansion.”

The post-race gathering will be at the Orange Beach Sportsplex, where food and refreshments will be served. There will be a cash bar for adults. Live music will be performed 6:30 until midnight. There’ll be prizes for every age, and the city is constructing a glass plaque that will include all age divisions with winners’ names on the trail.

The race is being sponsored by a number of local businesses, organizations, and individuals. The proceeds will be donated to the City of Orange Beach to be used for the expansion of the trail.

The backcountry trail was officially opened on March 9. It’s a joint effort of the City of Orange Beach, Gulf State Park, property owners and the trail's association.

Children are welcome to run. For more information and registration visit www.RunningScared5k.com.
