Fountain City Productions and the Hatchett Foundation will present “Saint Alice of Chattahoochee,” written and performed by Alice Johnson and directed by Rod Menzies, Oct. 5-6, at 7:30 p.m., at Theatre 98, corner of Morphy Avenue and Church Street in Fairhope.
Tickets are $15 at the door, and reservations are being accepted at (251) 406-2606.
Johnson brings to life over 30 characters in this one-woman comic odyssey. It’s an offbeat, hilarious, coming-of-age story of a young woman and her unlikely vision of stardom and fame.
She begins her journey as a diabolically ambitious 9-year-old determined to lip-synch her way to the top. Along the way, beauty pageant queens, community theater directors, religious fanatics — even her own family — thwart her quest for greatness.
Oversexed and underappreciated, a determined Alice sets off on a wildly entertaining journey into the heart of ambition, belonging and family, ending in a revelation that will either land her in an institution or pave the way to glory and peace for all. It is indeed a tall tale in a very small town.
Johnson’s theater credits include productions at the Tony Award-winning Actors Theatre of Louisville, and in New York: New Dramatists, Soho Rep, New Georges, and company member in Jim Simpson’s Bat Theater Co. at the Flea Theatre.
Other credits include “Sex and the City,” Miramax Short Films, and the soon-to-be-released 'Shortcut to Happiness,” with Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins.
Director Rod Menzies has directed over 40 stage productions and served as voice coach for the Off-Broadway hits Ann Randolph’s “Squeeze Box,” Bo Eason’s “Runt of the Litter” and Pamela Gien’s “Syringa Tree.”
Other clients include Patricia Arquette, David Duchovny, Marcia Cross, Marishka Hargitay, Neil Patrick Harris, Sandra Oh and Alicia Silverstone.
Johnson lives and works in Los Angeles. She has performed St. Alice in Los Angeles, New York, New Orleans and her hometown, Columbus, Ga.
She was invited to perform in Fairhope after local residents Colleen and Larkin Hatchett attended a benefit performance of St. Alice at Tulane University, Johnson’s alma mater.
The mother and daughter duo were so impressed with they comedic performance they contacted Johnson about performing in Alabama.
“I was laughing so hard my jaw hurt. It was that funny! We thought to ourselves, we’ve got to see if we can get her to come to Alabama.”
