Sally M. Carpenter, 80, a former resident of Foley and a resident of Spartanburg, S.C., died Thursday, May 5, 2011 in Spartanburg.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John W. Carpenter; and daughter, Mary VonVille.
She was a long-time member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bon Secour, and served as a layEucharistic minister, Chalice bearer, and on the Alter Guild. She sang in the choir, filled many positions on the Vestry and coordinated the Vacation Bible School program.
She was a dedicated volunteer who worked tirelessly to make life better for those in her community and beyond. She volunteered for the American Red Cross Disaster Team, Ecumenical Ministries, Church Women United, Volunteer Action, South Baldwin Literacy Council (co-founder with her husband), Learn to Read of NW Florida, United Way and the Foley Public Library. In her free time, she was an avid bowler and enjoyed her membership in the LA Sassy's Red Hat Society.
Survivors include three children, Marcia Reaver, Richard Dempster and Russell Dempster; two step-children, Edward Carpenter and David Carpenter; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 17 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Bon Secour. Visitation will follow.
