Sam W. "Wally" Covert Sr.

Sam W. “Wally” Covert Sr., 83, a native of New Orleans and a resident of Fairhope, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2010 at his home after a short illness.

He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Merchant Marines delivering war material to the allies prior to reaching the age to be inducted into the Army. He worked a total of 44 years with the Mobile Press Register, retiring in 1995 as press room foreman. He was a longtime member of St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Mobile and later at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Fairhope.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Margaret Desmond Covert; three sons, Sam (Debbie) Covert Jr., J. Doug (Belinda) Covert and Clifford W. (Glenda) Covert; daughter, Theresa A. Covert; 11 grandchildren, Ashley, Erin, Natalie, Clay, Chrissy, Amber, Dana, Amy, Lesley, Brittany and Caleb; nine great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends.

Visitation begins at 10 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens of Fairhope.
