Christine Turrentine Smith Sams, 100, a longtime resident of Birmingham and a resident of Daphne, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009 in Irvington.
She was a longtime member of Homewood Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was an active Girl Scout leader for 80 years and was the first Golden Eaglet Scout in Birmingham. She won many swimming trophies and played on a city championship basketball team.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, O.Leon “Shorty” Sams, and a grandson, Edwin Coit Grissom Jr.
Survivors include two children, Shirley (Edwin) Grissom of Fairhope, Alan (Peggy) Sams of Daphne; two grandchildren, David Alan Sams and Lisa Renee Sams; three great-grandchildren, Christen Elmore, Nathan Alan Sams and Avery Alan Lewis; and one great-great-grandson, Alex Elmore.
Visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Daphne. Graveside services will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the Girl Scouts of America.
