Robert L. “Ajax” Sanders, 86, of Foley, who served in the South Pacific in World War II as a soldier, died a peaceful death at home on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008.

He was past Commander of V.F.W. Post 1279 in Rensselaer, Ind., and also served as 2nd District Commander in Indiana.

He was an over-the-road truck driver much of his life with Talbert Trailers and was especially proud of being selected to deliver specially designed trailers to NASA in Florida.

He was born on Sept. 6, 1921 to Rachel Sharp Sanders and Lee A. Sanders in Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Lelah Mae Neely Sanders.

Survivors include a son, Sherman Sanders of Foley; two daughters, Linda Charlene (Bill) Webb of Rensselaer, Ind., and Lelah Maxine (Ken) Zawodny of Temperance, Mich.; brother, Donald Sanders of Michigan City, Ind.; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; special friends, Dean Toner and Rob Bushnell; and significant other, Gigi Laubscher of Foley.

Memorial services to be announced at a later date.
