FAIRHOPE, Alabama— Morning temperatures are predicted at 40 degrees this Friday, which, though cold, should be about right to get in the mood for walking to school with Santa Claus.
Now in its fourth year, a local walk-to-school program features themed walks, such as Mardi Gras in February, flower-themed walks in spring, and a “Jingle Bells” walk in December.
“This was an extremely popular walk last year for students and their siblings, as everyone wanted to get a chance to walk alongside Santa,” said Charlene Lee, program director for Smart Coast, which organized the walk-to-school program. “I’ve never seen so many happy smiles in my life.”
The Dec. 2 “Santa Stroll,” when Santa dons a yellow vest and walks to school with local elementary students, is sponsored by Smart Coast, a South Alabama nonprofit organization that seeks sustainable growth policies, in partnership with the city of Fairhope, local business merchants and Baldwin County Schools.
Fairhope Elementary School students and parents should meet at the Fairhope Public Library at 7:15 a.m. “The walk will begin rain or shine but make sure to bundle up if it’s cold,” Lee said.
Last year, the Fairhope City Council adopted a resolution that Mayor Tim Kant signed, showing the city’s support of the Smart Walk program.
“Fairhope families really get the message,” Lee said. “It’s about living in a healthier connected fashion and getting out with your community to interact.”
